Inkling of Concern: Chemicals in Tattoo Inks Face Scrutiny


Studies have found that tattoo inks contain chemicals such as benzo(a)pyrene can cause skin cancer. Phthalates, another chemical found in many of the tattoo inks can mimic estrogen, disrupt testosterone, and cause defect of fetuses. Colored inks include lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, titanium that can trigger allergies. Black tattoo inks contain combustion: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, another public health concern.
